Job Summary:
The Albertin Lab at Harvard University studies the evolution of developmental patterning mechanisms using cephalopods and other molluscs as model systems. We employ diverse approaches, including gene expression analyses, lineage tracing, live imaging, and CRISPR-mediated gene manipulation to probe molecular and cellular mechanisms driving the development of molluscan brains and body plans, with the goal of revealing fundamental principles underlying the evolution of development. We are seeking a Research Assistant II to support our growing lab needs.
Job-Specific Responsibilities:
This position will report directly to the Principal Investigator and perform the following duties:
- Leads laboratory experiments utilizing standard techniques and equipment;
- Collects data related to cephalopod embryology and genomics;
- Handles animal care;
- Performs microscopy and data analysis;
- Performs general laboratory maintenance such as maintaining and cleaning equipment and ordering supplies;
- May process orders or invoices, or undertake other duties under the direction of administrative personnel;
- Other related duties as necessary.
This position requires the individual to work occasional nights and/or weekends.
Working Conditions:
Laboratory setting.
Physical Requirements:
Minimal exposure to biohazardous chemicals. Occasional lifting of heavy objects (<30 pounds).
Basic Qualifications:
College background in Biology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or other similar field. At least two years of lab experience with imaging, molecular biology, and/or bioinformatics. Education may count towards experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
Undergraduate degree (B.S. or B.A.) in any of the following biological or physical sciences: Biology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or other similar field. The ideal candidate will have at least 4 years of prior experience working on interdisciplinary research and will have direct experience with confocal imaging, basic molecular biological tools, handling cephalopod or other marine embryos. Must have a strong background and proficiency in biology and enjoy working in a collaborative team with others. Must know standard laboratory practices and be familiar with general laboratory equipment. Must be highly motivated, organized, and able to work independently. This position requires the individual to work occasionally at night or on weekends.
