Job Description

The Financial Analyst will assume a key role in Harvard Law School (HLS) financial planning by providing financial reporting and analysis, producing current year forecasts, and supporting the development of the annual and multiyear operating budgets.  

The HLS Finance team is dedicated to providing financial expertise in support of the goals of our faculty, students and staff. With a commitment to service excellence, integrity, sound controls, and a positive work environment, we strive to be a key resource to our HLS colleagues and to the broader University community. We aim to provide accurate, timely, and relevant financial information to facilitate effective decision making in service of the Law School’s commitment to excellence. 

As a member of HLS’ Financial Planning and Analysis team, the Financial Analyst will provide financial analysis and support to a $300M budget. The successful candidate will partner with departments across the school to provide strategic analytical support including budget analysis and reporting. We expect the candidate to develop a mastery of Harvard’s financial tools, systems, and processes, as well as a deep understanding of the Law School’s organizational priorities, administrative departments, and teaching and research programs in order to support current-year analysis and short- and long-range forecasts. 

As a Financial Analyst you will: 

  • Produce financial reports, including monthly, quarterly, annual and ad hoc 
  • Prepare summary analysis for a broad range of audiences (from department heads to HLS Dean) 
  • Support the annual and multi-year planning processes, including operational assignments such as uploading to and troubleshooting information in the University’s budget tool 
  • Enhance, produce and distribute unit-specific planning materials; develop and produce materials to facilitate annual budget planning and financial monitoring of budget-to-actuals at the local level 
  • Support the development of new management reports to assist decision making among school leadership 
  • Conduct complex financial analysis and update financial models and projections 
  • Analyze and project budgets and financial activity for multiple programs 
  • Provide technical advice and problem resolution for a school/unit financial community 
  • Participate in development, enhancement, and testing of reports within University financial applications 
  • Ensure financial compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations 
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

 


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who are/have: 

  • Strong computer and analytical skills including extensive prior experience with Excel, and knowledge of PowerPoint and Word 
  • Highly organized and detail oriented with strong time and project management skills 
  • Strong understanding of how to optimize the use of data in decision support 
  • Willingness and ability to learn new technical skills when needed, such as basic SQL, Oracle Analytics, or other various tools and methods  
  • Organizational, interpersonal, communication and consultative skills 
  • Ability to anticipate and provide thorough financial analysis 
  • Strong computer and analytical skills including extensive prior experience with Excel, and knowledge of PowerPoint and Word 
  • Ability to develop trusting working relationships with colleagues 
  • Ability to work in a collegial atmosphere with a culture of fun with accountability 
  • Experience in higher education a plus

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
