Job Summary:
The Holbrook Lab at Harvard University studies the transport of water and photoassimilates through vascular plants, including the role of roots and stomata in controlling fluxes. We are a plant physiology research lab. We seek a full-time Research Assistant I to support our growing lab needs.
Job-Specific Responsibilities:
Typical Duties:
- Conduct lab measurements comparing guard cell turgor pressure measured using a microcapillary connected to a pressure transducer versus a new method in which a laser is used to nucleate a bubble inside the cell;
- Under direction, assist with experiments to measure gas exchange of leaves and collect samples for hormone analysis.
- Assist with maintaining experimental plants in greenhouse, growth chambers, and experimental garden.
- Assist with measurements of the permeance of gases through woody tissues of black gum and other species;
- Under direction, processes, organizes and summarizes data, reporting experiment results using a variety of scientific, word processing, spreadsheet or statistical software applications or program platforms;
- As a member of a project team, may assist in the design of laboratory experiments, techniques, and protocols;
- May perform routine logging and/or testing of samples;
- May occasionally instruct others in basic laboratory techniques;
- Performs related laboratory maintenance such as maintaining and cleaning equipment and ordering supplies;
- May process orders or invoices, or undertake other clerical and simple accounting duties under the direction of administrative personnel.
Physical Requirements:
May be required to lift, move, and transport related laboratory equipment. May be required to work with a variety of hazardous materials.
Basic Qualifications:
College background in Biology or other similar field. At least one year of related work experience in a lab. Education may count towards experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
B.S. or B.A. in biological or physical sciences. The ideal candidate will have at least 12 months of prior experience in research. Must have a strong background and proficiency in biology and enjoy working in a collaborative team with others. Must know standard laboratory practices and be familiar with general laboratory equipment. Must be highly motivated, organized, and able to work independently.
