Job Description

The Harvard Law School Library seeks a Director for Planning and Management to help reimagine and build the next generation of legal information infrastructure and law library organization. At Harvard Law School Library, we collect the world's most comprehensive legal materials—from 12th-century illuminated manuscripts to datasets we build ourselves— as our holdings anticipate the information scholars will need for the next two-hundred fifty years and beyond.

As the Director you will: 

  • Serve as strategic advisor to the Assistant Dean for Library and Information Resources to develop and implement the library's strategic vision and planning, operations, communications, and cross-functional initiatives. Responsible for establishing priorities and create comprehensive action plans. 
  • Assess and report the needs, available resources, and potential opportunities across library departments, as well as anticipate risks, outcomes, and impacts of projects or initiatives; Contribute to decision-making across library leadership including between the Assistant Dean and the Vice Dean by providing accurate information and assessments of progress towards strategic goals. 
  • Provide oversight and perform day to day management for the administrative team, ensuring effective management of their work, performance and professional development including high level goal setting.  
  • Establish institutional alignment and ensure the library's mission and strategic goals are communicated, understood, integrated, and realized across departments and projects. 
  • Creatively identify, triage, and resolve departmental problems or blockers in collaboration with department heads and library staff. 
  • Manage the maintenance and integration of emerging technologies and projects, including products from other departments within the library.
  • Oversee the selection, development, and scoping of new projects, activities, and initiatives for the library in collaboration with key stakeholders. Navigate a variety of complex institutional structures and relationships. Communicate the impact and value of the library's work both library-wide and to external stakeholders, potential collaborators, and our broader academic communities. Responsible to build, promote, and strengthen internal and external collaboration across staff and senior-level stakeholders. Contribute to the preparation, recommendations and monitoring of the Library budget. Will consult Assistant Dean of Library and Information Services on budgetary decisions.   
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree 
  • 10+ years of professional experience in administration, finance or other business operations 
  • Supervisory experience required

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who have:

  • Masters degree a plus.
  • Experience in an academic library; law library a plus.
  • Experience developing, coaching and/or supervising staff to promote collaboration and foster a growth mindset.
  • Ability to promote working relationships in cross-functional teams and set a positive tone.
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and diplomacy. 
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Natural curiosity and motivation to learn. 
  • Comfort with ambiguity and evolving environments. 
  • Enjoy working with diverse groups of people.

Other Information:

This position is hybrid schedule, typically with two days remote and three days on-site in Cambridge, Massachusetts. All remote work must be performed within a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT and WA). 

Occasional travel may be required.

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.

Salary Grade and Ranges
