About the Department:
HMS MEDscience's mission is to inspire and empower a rising generation of STEM leaders. Our program immerses students in realistic and dynamic simulated medical emergencies that transform the way that students approach and solve problems. Our vision is that all students, regardless of background, education, or zip code, should have equal opportunities in education and the sciences. HMS MEDscience engages over 4,000 high school students (including nearly 1,200 Boston Public School students) through school-year and summer programs.
HMS MEDscience seeks a skilled and experienced computer scientist, dynamic educator and communicator, and entrepreneurial program builder to lead the MEDscienceTECH Program. This position will be responsible for MEDscienceTECH program growth, including developing new curriculum, developing and implementing a marketing and outreach plan to cultivate partnerships, and representing HMS MEDscience with schools, community partners, and in the Massachusetts’ medtech and life sciences’ ecosystems.
The Assistant Director of MEDscienceTECH reports to the Director of HMS MEDscience and serves on the organization’s partnership management team, collaborating with the leadership team to ensure alignment and drive strategic partnership goals. MEDscienceTECH is a growing, early-stage program that is in need of someone with a deep understanding of the broader biomedical engineering education and career development landscape as well as the ability to think creatively and structure collaborations that advance shared priorities. This role also includes curriculum development requiring subject matter expertise in computer science, biomedical engineering, and life sciences.
This person will also serve as a lead teacher for HMS MEDscience’s flagship clinical program. In this capacity, they will develop and implement scope and sequence for semester-long partnerships with schools, based on shared priorities. They will deliver MEDscience’s clinical curriculum and make adjustments tailored to the priorities of schools and experience-level of students, while also leading and mentoring less experienced teachers.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to teach 3-4 sessions each day (75 minutes/session)
- Requires assisting in set-up of simulation and robotics equipment, which can include lifting and carrying objects of moderate weight.

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
- Minimum of 5 years' relevant work experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
- Advanced science degree strongly preferred.
- At least 3 years of experience teaching, preferably in an urban high school setting. Leadership experience in a K-12 STEM education setting (in or out-of-school), preferably serving diverse populations of students. • Proficiency in computer science languages (our curriculum uses Python).
- Experience developing science curriculum for high school students, preferably in a hands-on format that prioritizes the development of scientific knowledge and the skills required to succeed in 21st century STEM careers.
- Experience as an articulate and inspiring public speaker. Creative writer and curriculum developer, with demonstrated ability to develop engaging case-based scientific content and to tailor curriculum for diverse populations of students, with varying educational backgrounds and prior relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing new programs and leading projects. Excels at introducing innovative ideas, identifying opportunities, and working collaboratively to advance strategic priorities. Able to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and effectively prioritize time and tasks while adapting to changing needs and priorities.
- High level of maturity and empathy with proven ability to build strong relationships and develop trusts with colleagues and a diverse network of stakeholders (including educators, high school students, and STEM industry leaders).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to represent organization in wide range of settings (including with senior leaders in the medtech/healthcare communities).
- Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hours per week
